Review of Blue Valentine (2010) by Mark H — 06 Jul 2012
It took me awhile to get used to the separation between the flashbacks and the present, but it ended up giving the film an added quality. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling are tremendous (as usual) playing a married couple whose relationship is disintegrating.
The film gives you a breakdown of the romance that leads up to the marriage as well as the agonizing breakdown. What I found to be particularly compelling was the notion that it is sometimes very difficult to figure out why things don't work in a relationship anymore, but one of the people has fallen out of love.
I think this film captured that very well, and it may not have been possible to pull it off without such supremely talented actors.
