Review of Blue Valentine (2010) by Jonathan P — 10 Aug 2012

I want to hate this movie. The ending was terrible and left me depressed and upset. My initial reaction was to hop on and give Blue Valentine a terrible review and rating. I stopped myself and after taking a day to think about it can give it a more reasonable rating and review.

Blue Valentine is a good movie because of the feelings (good or bad) it is able to provoke. Where I was looking for a happy ending Blue Valentine chose the opposite and as much as I hated it the sad truth is reality is much more similar to this movie than movies like The Notebook.

I won't go in to detail as to who was more at fault for the failed marriage (Cindy) but the consequences of each characters actions make for thought provoking debates. Blue Valentine isn't my style of movie but it does what it sets out to do well making for a strange love and hate relationship with the viewers.
