Review of Blue Valentine (2010) by Philip S — 18 Mar 2013
A terrific movie, but not exactly a pick-me-up. Be warned, if you see this movie, you will not feel better about life afterwards. Still interested? Ok, then. The film is largely improvised, which has its pros and cons, but overall the acting is stellar.
Gosling proves once again he is not just a pretty face. The fact he was not nominated for an Oscar over Colin Firth (The King's Speech), Jeff Bridges (True Grit) and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) is indicative of the problem with the Academy Awards.
Michelle Williams WAS nominated - proof that the film was at least on the Academy's radar. My sole complaint is that the blame for the disintegrating relationship seems a bit too one-sided. Dean (Gosling) proves to be a hero at many turns and is determined to keep the relationship intact, while Cindy (Williams) seems to be the victim of her own poor choices.
But, hey, I guess that sort of thing happens. I think this film affected me more now that I am married and a father, so perhaps singles won't find it as compelling, Still, strongly recommended - if you have the stomach for it.
Features perhaps the best end credits sequences I have seen.
