Review of Blue Valentine (2010) by Fritz F — 08 Jul 2014
This is not a tragedy. This is not emotional or powerful. This is not heartbreaking. The script and direction make this into a grim and uninteresting waste of time. The characters have very little depth or drive to them, with a pretty ordinary and forgettable backstory.
The sex scenes are supposedly phenomenal, when really they are just poorly shot, like the whole film itself, and all close up and shaky. Blue Valentine was supposed to teach me something about divorce and bad marriage.
This taught and showed me nothing more than a simple and flat divorce, it even lacks in the soundtrack department as well. While I cannot call Blue Valentine a terrible movie, because in the end it never felt all that boring or worthless, but it was still absolutely sub-standard.
This disappointing and lazy attempt at what could've been a potent and moving masterpiece is nothing more than a slow examination.
