Review of Blue Valentine (2010) by Hal M — 05 Apr 2012
An outstanding but truly searing drama. Superbly acted. A bit too sliced & diced with flashforwards/flashbacks in my opinion, but not incoherent. Directed by Derek Cianfrance, this wowed the audience at its Sundance premier.
Actress Michelle Williams does an amazing job of being 18ish in some scenes, 25ish in others. Ryan Gosling matches her step for step. Interesting special feature on the DVD, on how they made the movie.
The director and both leads were involved in developing this idea for six long years (though the leads did not know each other; they only knew the director Cianfrance). In order for the leads to become highly familiar with one another, they literally lived in a house together for a month (with that little girl actress), eating, cleaning, playing together, building authentic behavior patterns and shared memories.
