Review of Blue Like Jazz (2012) by Kat B — 05 Apr 2012
If I say that "Blue Like Jazz" is one of the only explicitly Christian movies I've seen that I didn't feel embarrassed by, it'll sound like I'm damning it with faint praise. But as it turns out, it's actually good, full-stop: witty and funny, beautifully shot and well acted, and sure-footed in its emotions and pacing.
If you're tired of annoyingly bad and embarrassingly preachy religious movies, I encourage you to see this one. For centuries now, Christians have made music, paintings, books and poems that set the standard for artistic achievement.
But there's an astonishing dearth of Christian movies that actually succeed as art, or for that matter, are even worth watching. Maybe "Blue LIke Jazz" is a harbinger of better things to come.
