Review of Blue Jasmine (2013) by Kem W — 23 Oct 2014
The best Woody Allen movie I've seen in years. Easily on a par with Annie Hall. Cate Blanchett's performance is stunning. Easily deserved her Oscar. But Sally Hawkins' performance is with her every step of the way.
It's called a comedy, and, I suppose, to first order it is. But take a way Allens's weird Dixie Land Jazz soundtrack, and this is an outstanding drama. Jasmine is rich, vain, and selfish. Ginger is down on her luck but with a good heart.
Sisters, one with "good genes", the other not so much. SF looks great. Do you like great acting? Then this is the movie for you. Allen kept a light touch and the actors soared. Kudos to Bobby Cannavale, too, who plays Hawkins' over-emotional boyfriend.
Highly recommended. Not to miss if you like great acting.
