Review of Blue Jasmine (2013) by Bryanfox — 29 Jul 2019
Blue Jasmine works because of two major reasons- Woody Allen's writing and Cate Blanchett's performance. The film is about Jasmine- a rich socialite who has suddenly lost everything and comes to visit her much poorer sister for a few days.
Blue Jasmine is straightforward and contains many funny scenes, but the overall theme would probably qualify as tragi-comedy. A film such as this needs a towering performance to stand out and Blanchett gives us just that- she truly becomes the neurotic, self-obsessed, self-centered jasmine.
Alongside her there are some good performances from the likes of Sally Hawking's, Alec Baldwin and Peter Sarsgaald but this is Blanchett's movie through and through. Blue Jasmine is a must watch thanks to Cate Blanchett- go for it.
