I wouldn't call this movie a comedy in the slightest. I would call it a riveting story that could be true. I know this is just a story but the premise is very possible. In a small way, Cate Blanchett's character Jasmine could parallel Princess Diana's life.

Diana was basically plucked into an amazingly glamorous life where she lost most of her identity only to realize that she had been completely used for her beauty. The unraveling of Jasmine's story is very easy to follow even though it is mingled with flash backs.

The question arises as to why Jasmine fell so hard. Did she really love her husband and felt completely betrayed? Did she fall in love with the lifestyle and couldn't cope with losing it all? Did she let her luxurious lifestyle define her and now she had no identity? I think that she fell so hard because she did not cultivate any bonds with her friends or family.

Jasmine's sister (Sally Hawkins) did an amazing job in her role. Jasmine took full advantage of her sister's good heart, missing her wedding, criticizing her husband and boyfriend and even losing her money and not even feeling remorse.

She aligned herself with status instead of or at least along with her sister, step son and friends. When you choose your friends based on their income, you lose their "friendship" when you lose your income.

At the end, the question remains if Jasmine can be healed without anyone left in the world who cares about her.
