Review of Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) by Alberto A — 01 Dec 2013

I don't know if it is my English level or the lack of existing adjectives, but I really cannot find a word to describe how marvelous "Blue Is The Warmest Color" is. The film painted almost every principle I believe in when it comes to love, living as a couple and gender. In its powerful symbolic and intelligent screenplay we can clearly see how if people fall for someone, they're decidedly not falling for the whole gender, as many people think.

The movie follows the story of Adele, an almost adult girl who realizes what she wants in her life when she meets Emma, a blue-eyed blue-haired girl with a reputation of being homosexual. I could naturally see Adele could not help falling in love with someone of the same gender, it just happened. At the same time, two completely different girls. While Emma is runs in bohemian-kind circles, Adele wants to be a kindergarten teacher. I think this is because she might be clinging on to her old and almost non-existent innocence before she encountered with homosexuality. Both Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos gave superb and touching performances. Thanks to their beautiful work, I almost cried in a scene! And the people who know me are aware this is almost impossible with me. They had such an amazing chemistry that even the most homophobic person, the one that thinks homosexuality is unnatural, would see how natural it can be. All of these is because the strength of their performances. But it may not happen, because I saw a few people performing the "walk of shame" by leaving the theatre in the middle of the film.

No, I do not think this movie is overlong, every scene is worth it. Just saying, the film's original name is La Vie d'Adele (the life of Adele), how can get to know Adele's life essence with a teeny-tiny 90-minute like foreign films usually last but we only get to see a glimpse of a story.

This Palme d'Or winner lacks nothing, it even has an amazing and symbolic cinematography. Vigorously recommended.
