Review of Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) by Thomas W — 20 Dec 2013
Blue Is the Warmest Color won't win the Best Foreign Language film at the Oscars this year ... and it won't even be nominated. It is not because the film doesn't deserve either but because France submitted another film (the much lesser Renoir) for the honor.
What were they thinking as Blue was a big winner at this year's Cannes Film Festival?! Blue is a modern love story set in Lille, France and follows young Adele (an awesome -- OMG! -- Adele Exarchopoulos) as she stumbles finding love in her late teens and early professional career.
The film follows five-or-so years of Adele's life as she has a few random relationships that don't fully satisfy her and one enduring one with blue-haired art student, Emma (an also very good Lea Seydoux - Farewell, My Queen), who is a few years her senior and much wiser and experienced in the ways of the world (as well as the "ways" of many other things).
Much has been said about the long and graphic sex scenes between the two actresses ... and, well, I'm not really sure how necessary these (very graphic) scenes are but as I am not the director of the film what more can one say that hasn't already been said about it all? Exarchopoulos does an amazing job in the role and the chemistry between the two actresses feels real and genuine.
They have highs and lows ... like all relationships do and this makes Blue a pretty great film as it puts nothing on and tells a true-ish story about two souls embracing the dangers of love head-on (who happen to be female .
.. so yes, some of you might want to avoid this film). It looks and feels European so that will also detract some but serious cinema-goers should give this one a watch. Blue happens to be my favorite color -- my car is blue, my watch is blue, my phone is blue, half of my wardrobe is blue -- so perhaps I am biased; but .
..
