Review of Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) by Brett H — 25 Jun 2014
Intensely emotional and unapologetically honest, this foreign romance is unlike most of it's counterparts by creating true "characters" and not a single moment between them rings false. The film is very touching and presents a fly-on-the-wall perspective of a physically-driven relationship between two women, and it's fascinating in it's straight-forwardness.
The film is too long at three hours and even though it gives you much more time to get behind the characters, I don't feel every minute of it was needed. The sex scenes are also extremely graphic and I really commend the actresses for being brave enough to participate.
The Adele character is super sweet and has a smile that will light up a room, while the exotic Emma acts as a forbidden fruit and the passion flows freely between them. There is a lull in the 2nd act where it becomes a typical relationship-style film with the couple arguing, etc, but it really is a unique piece and I highly stress this is for mature audiences only!
