Review of Blow Out (1981) by Scott K — 23 Nov 2011
Blow Out is a movie that I knew was gonna be good, but I didn't really fathom how good. It's fantastic, incredible, brilliant, and extremely entertaining. It's structured as a play but does things only a movie can do.
It's beautifully shot and brilliantly directed. John Lithgow of course is wonderful as an ingenious killer (he always is), and John Travolta is great, too. There were times when I became aware I was watching a movie and taken out a little, specifically when the '70s-B-Movie-ish score would kick in, but it works with the story so well since Jack Terri is a B-Movie sound man.
Once I quickly got over this, I was back to being engrossed by the story. There's the best kind of twist at the end, the kind that wraps everything up and is extremely satisfying, but also isn't something the audience is expecting or anxiously awaiting.
Blow Out is a movie that wraps you up so tightly with its brilliance that you forget there's other things going on, but once you're brought back to those other things, they're pleasantly familiar.
