Review of Blow Out (1981) by Julian P — 17 Jun 2007
De Palma's "most personal" and a fan favourite. Despite being significantly modernist. It is more "classical" than Blow Up, but less "serious" (on surface) than The Conversation.
However, this time, De Palma's satire, morality and politics meet hand in hand. The one film (apart from his bit part in Carrie) to repent for his many travesties (you don't need a list). Not to mention.
..JOHN LITHGOW! (De Palma regular). Oh, and NYPD's Dennis Franz too (another regular). If De Palma was respected more these terrific character actors may not have ended up resorting to mediocre television shows.
Arguably Vilmos Zsigmond greatest photographic work for De Palma (The Black Dahlia is the contender, but let us not forget Obsession and to a lesser extent...Bonfire of the Vanities). Watch it!!! - and not just because it's one of Tarantino's favourites (word on the street is he stole some of the soundtrack for Death Proof, the SWINE!).
