Review of Blow Out (1981) by Michael R — 30 Apr 2011
The blu ray is spectacular if only because it looks better than ever like a fresh 35MM print. It is Brian De Palma's masterpiece of breathtaking visual skill and broken compassion. A sound recordist (Travolta) inadvertently records an assassination involving a blown tire and a hired prostitute (a staple of political hits).
Like most people back then (not today lol) he believes the truth should be known, and tries to uncover the conspiracy only to see that such things can never be undone and never truly known. Power shuffles its players irrespective of ordinary citizens, and those trapped in the game have inevitable tragic circumstances.
The sound guy tries to do the right thing and gets everyone killed. People think the ending is cynical but it is just wisdom that reality can be a cruel joke, and the harshest things simply have to be lived with.
A great film from an era when cinema was akin to literature.
