Review of Bloody Sunday (2002) by Yago C — 24 Aug 2007
This was a very powerful, very disturbing movie. It made me feel great sympathy for all the individuals caught in the situation, even some of the lower ranking british military officials and the derry police chief, but especially Ivan Cooper and the other non-violent marchers.
But it also did a great job of highlighting the real cause of the tragedy: the military occupation that put people in an impossible situation; one in which they (obviously esp. the british military) then failed to make good choices.
the cinema verite style of the movie was absolutely effective in forcing me to feel a participation in the events and therefore to feel the fear, horror, and anger of that day and of the political-military situation that made it all but inevitable.
It left me crying for the suffering, admiring those -- like Cooper -- who risked so much and worked so hard to peacefully struggle for freedom (as well as for the many who do so today in comparable situations), and uncertain and ashamed about how little I have contributed to that same struggle.
