Review of Bloody Sunday (2002) by Samson D — 05 Dec 2011
Bleak but captivating, Bloody Sunday is hauntingly realistic, recreating the events with lots of vivid detail, much like Paul Greengrass' later film United 93. Greengrass is a solid action director (he would later go on to make the superior Bourne sequels), but he really doesn't have much of a style beyond shaky cameras and fast edits.
This worked very well for the Bourne films, but they were spy-thrillers loaded with action sequences. Bloody Sunday probably would have benefited from some more creative cinematography and more inspired direction, but if you are genuinely interested in the IRA subject matter as I was, then the frightening realism pays off in spades.
