Review of Bloodsport (1988) by Gary B — 28 Nov 2008
This is one of the best Van Damme films I've seen. It's right up there with Kickboxer.
I noticed somebody commenting that this film had good fight scenes for the time that it was made. I'd agree but I'd also have to go further and say that they are pretty good fight scenes in comparison to the stuff we've been forced to watch for the last ten years.
The current fashion is to have fight scenes involving confusing close ups quickly cutting from one shot to the next so that you don't really know what's happening. I prefer the shot's that we see here in Bloodsport. The camera keeps it's distance and you can actually tell what's going on. I blame the Matrix myself, uurgh.
Importantly for Van Damme scholars out there this is the point where the sassy female reporter first makes an appearance*. I can't really remember why she was there but I strongly suspect that it was just an excuse for the gratuitous buttock shot.
Other notable points are the appearance of Forest Whitaker as a government stooge trying to ruin the Kumite and Bolo Yeung dancing a bit.
