Review of Blood Simple (1985) by Michael C — 10 Apr 2009
The first film the Coen Brothers made, and it is safe to say that even in their humble origins they were already treading into masterpiece territory. The story of a jilted husbands request to have his wife and her lover murdered, and how all of that goes horribly wrong, the film is darker than many of the other films in the Coen canon, but there are still moments that carry their tone of humor laced with lunacy.
The performances are very strong in this film, and of special note is that classic Coen frenetic pace of the camera and the great lighting in the film. This was definitely an original voice in film and in the crime genre, and it is an absolute blast to watch even today.
Probably one of the better films to flourish out of the 80's.
