Review of Blood Simple (1985) by Bryan W — 20 Jun 2009
Sets the precedent for Coen brothers movies with relatively 'simple' plots that involve murder. The part the viewer is always invited to enjoy the most is the fact that all of the plot's complications arise from the downright idiotic actions of the protagonists.
Having seen 'Fargo' first, it's difficult not to draw comparisons, especially since this film clearly has a lower budget and isn't quite as tight and simultaneously hilarious as its successor, but perhaps the most important thing with this film is that it laid the groundwork for their careers.
Just as 'Shivers' may not be David Cronenberg's best movie, this film is not the Coens at the top of their game, but there is an honesty on display here that any artist can only claim with their first work that manages popular success.
