Review of Blood Simple (1985) by Brian C — 16 Jan 2014
An unbelievably good debut film from two of the best filmmakers ever; that their first is one of their best just shows how great they are. Blood Simple is a blood-chilling noir/thriller about murder which leads to comical misunderstandings which lead to more murder.
The only flaw I found in this movie is actually one of its strengths; the characters aren't very interesting or likable. But the film is so well made that the pacing, look, and sound of the whole thing generates more suspense than most horror movies can accomplish.
The events can also be seen as blackly humorous; if the characters were more involving, they wouldn't be at all. With their first film, the Coen brothers have crafted a 90 minute textbook on cinematic suspense.
It accomplishes everything it goes for, and the thrills still shock after multiple viewings. It's one of a handful of truly perfect movies these guys would bring us.
