This has a lot going for as a debut feature. Mostly this impressed me for its use of the camera. The Coens were tight with Sam Raimi and it really shows here.

The second thing that got my attention is the noir setting in the SouthWest. As I live in the SouthWest (Just not Texas) I find a certain affinity to this subset of the noir genre. It's a slightly different animal in that it's out of the typical urban setting and it feels more intimate due to the small towns and lack of people/social settings. It's the dark underbelly of rural living. The starkness of the outdoors at night seem far more frightening than the city. There's just no place to hide; even from yourself.
