Review of Blood Simple (1985) by Rob D — 25 Aug 2009
I personally have a difficult time when trying to clearly articulate, without adapting someone else's critique, what exactly makes the Coen brothers such unique and talented filmmakers. For starters, their ability to create and characterize is uncanny.
In Blood Simple, Frances McDormand is stellar (as usual), but here she is overshadowed by M. Emmet Walsh, who delivers an eerie and deranged performance as the private-eye. As the story progresses and the blood spews, all characters are pushed to their limits and their actions become unpredictable.
This only heightens the suspense and shock and the plot becomes a fight for survival. With innovative techniques utilized throughout, the visuals remain fresh. Blood Simple will make you jump, laugh, and shake your head with panicked empathy at the web of coincidence and disaster that unfolds throughout.
