Review of Blood Simple (1985) by Matt C — 04 Mar 2010
Wow. This is one of the Coen brothers' best, and it's their first film for crying out loud! It ranks right up there with No Country For Old Men and Fargo. It's filled with deceit, cheating, double-crosses, fatal miscommunication, insanity, delirium, and blood-curdling murder.
It's as if the Coens' happened to be at the right place at the right time in a Texas smalltown with a camera filming real-life tragedy. In other words, it doesn't feel tampered with by a filmmaker like some movies can feel.
It feels like this exact tale is playing itself out for the millionth time anywhere in the West. Also, not one of the performances is anything less than outstanding. I particulary loved John Getz and Frances McDormand's performances.
Anyways, this is what I get when I underestimate the magnificent Coen brothers. I popped this into my VHS thinking, come on, how good can it really be since its only their debut? I don't think I'll ever cease to be amazed by their work.
Go find this film wherever you can possibly get your greedy lil movie-loving paws on this and get ready to be amazed by the debut of one (well, two I guess) of the greatest ever work their magic.
