Review of Blitz (2011) by The D — 31 Jul 2011
Made out to be a serial killer movie this falls more under the mismatched cop genre more than anything else. It delivers an over the top far fetched picture of a cop killer & his pursuant counterparts in South London.
The above basically outlines the plot as Aiden Gillen's usual eccentric performance as Weiss goes about executing police officers in retribution for previous arrests.
In pursuit are Brant(Statham) & Nash(Considine) a no nonsense veteran cop & maticulous officer much maligned for his sexuality respectively.
Also in the mix is reporter Dunphy(Morrissey) picked out by Weiss to tell his story, Dunphy also has history with Brant.
As far as the characters go Statham just plays his usual self only refreshing that he's back on his own patch. Gillen as already mentioned goes over the top as usual & Morrissey hardly features as the scoop hungry journalist. Only Considine really shines as Nash who unlike Gillen & Morrissey manages to shake his native tongue convincingly.
The story bangs along noisily & predictably & only the climax saves it from being a complete disaster.
If you have a spare 90 minutes you may want to waste it here otherwise for die hard Statham fans only.
