Review of Blindspotting (2018) by Devaughn B — 26 Jul 2018
Produced, written by and starring the brilliant duo of Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, and directed by Carlos López Estrada, Blindspotting is an excellent, extremely powerful original film. Set in Oakland, the story follows Daveed Diggs as Collin and Rafael Casal as Miles, trying to get through the last three days of Collin's year-long probation, while struggling with life in the hood.
The inciting incident being Collin witnessing a white police officer shoot and kill a black man with his hands up screaming "Don't shoot", this film hits on some tough issues. Not just the police officer angle, but what this film's script does is absolutely amazing.
This is such a perfectly written and executed story, hitting other hard issues that are difficult to touch on in everyday conversation, and they certainly are not focused on much in film or TV today. The written dialogue really stands out here, and there were times I truly wanted to give standing ovations.
The way music is incorporated into the story and the dialogue is so clever, very powerful stuff. Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal give two explosive performances, two of the most commanding of the year - you definitely should check this one out!
