Review of Blended (2014) by Matthew J — 25 Aug 2014
People, please don't fund any more Adam Sandler vacations. Through a scenario that can literally only happen in the movies, a single father of three (Sandler) and a single mother of two (Drew Barrymore) have a nightmare first date.
Through crazy happenstance, they find themselves on an African vacation together where they have to get along. I keep no secrets on how I feel about Sandler: I think his comedy is lazy, his jokes are tired and I'm pretty sure he uses his movies to embezzle money.
There is one thing about this movie that makes this more tolerable than his standard affair: Drew Barrymore. She's capable as an actress, and she manages to ground Sandler in reality, keeping him from talking out of the side of his mouth too much.
That said, giving this a leg up on Grown Ups 2 is not the loftiest compliment you can pay a movie, so let me address this comedy's shortcomings: 1. these people are presented in such a way that you root for child services, as they are in no way equipped to be parents.
2. two hours is entirely too long for a comedy, especially one featuring Adam Sandler. 3. people here have no social filter, and the children and adults alike think it is perfectly acceptable to be buffoonish in public.
All qualms aside, the most bizarre thing about this movie has to be Terry Crews, who makes your eyes pop because he is in an entirely different movie altogether, one that is specifically designed so as to never allow you to forget the name of the movie.
This isn't the worst movie of they year like you may have come to expect with Adam Sandler movies, but it is still an Adam Sandler movie.
