Review of Blended (2014) by Gracie J — 20 Jun 2018
I absolutely detest this movie. When watching it with a group of friends, I was repulsed by the amount of laughs this casual racism managed to pull from them. While I have enjoyed Adam Sandler movies before, it seems as though, in my experience, the combination of Drew and Adam results in casual and not so casual racism.
As in '50 First Dates', we see parody of native cultures and, particularly in 'Blended', the generalization of entire cultures. The place they visited in this trashhole was simply referred to as 'Africa'.
Newsflash! Africa is 11.3 million square miles! In all, the movie had perhaps 2 good jokes that weren't overused and uncomfortable, the setting was awkward and made no sense, and the characters could each be described in 4 words.
The passing off of tomboys as girls who just haven't found themselves yet is horrid, and all together the characters are unrelatable and annoying. If you enjoyed this movie, you should check your privilege.
Please.
