Review of Blended (2014) by Jerry A — 16 Sep 2015
Extremely uneven romantic comedy that features the usually good-together Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. But in this edition, they look hesitant -- as if they started filming before doing any rehearsing.
The story has some promise with the often-seen story of people thrown together only to fall for each other with an African setting. The young actors do well, in particular Bella Thorne. I'm not sure what Terry Crews was there for.
His every appearance is jarring, to say the least, and not a bit funny or even understandable. I like him on Brooklyn 99, but he adds nothing to this movie. That said, I'll blame the failure on the Director who seems to just throw Terry into a scene at random times.
I think he is supposed to be the equivalent to the Little Shop of Horrors trio of background narrative singers, but fails in a big way. Plot devices were generally well thought out, with the exception of the absurd Ostrich-riding scene.
It was nice seeing a few familiar minor character actors from past Sandler movies in the background, like the wannabe Boy George from The Wedding Singer. So in summary, no where near as good as 50 First Dates, but OK for a semi-predictable rom-com.
