Review of Blazing Saddles (1974) by Stephen S — 04 Aug 2010
Possibly the most overrated movie of all time. I barely gave this 3 stars, and there were only 2 reasons why I did: the giant pie fight at the end, which was pretty amusing, and Gene Wilder, who is great here, as always.
Mel Brooks practically ruins this film by being in it. He's a brilliant writer, but he's just not funny in films. Spaceballs managed to be funny somehow, just because the other actors in the film (especially John Candy) gave 110% to make up for Mel Brooks' pathetic attempt at comedic acting.
Look at Young Frankenstein! As a masterpiece, t's clearly Mel Brooks' best film by far, and Mel Brooks ISN'T IN IT! That's why it's a great film! Mel Brooks just sucks at comedic acting, because he assumes his audience is retarded and that consequently, he has to shove every joke down the viewer's throat.
Watch Young Frankenstein or Spaceballs instead...they're much better films.
