Review of Blair Witch (2016) by Jeffrey B — 03 Oct 2016
The hope of the movie "Blair Witch" saving the Blair Witch series will forever be a dream after what director Adam Wingard gave to his audience. To why "Blair Witch" didn't revive the series, one must be a horror movie fan or see it through a fan's perspective. When it comes to a good horror movie there is way more a fan would analyze about the movie, rather than just watching for a few unexpected startles. Although, there were a few good things Adam Wingard did well, but there were countless flaws in the movie that made anything that was good hard to even notice.
Lisa (Callie Hernandez) has to make a documentary and coincidentally around the same time James (James Allen McCune) found a video that he believes has evidence that his sister is still in the Black Hills Forest. This makes Lisa and James take two friends and two strangers into the woods with them to seek for evidence about his sister. Just from knowing this much information about the movie is what has horror movie lovers go crazy with anticipation. The only thing that made Adam Wingard's idea not come alive is the actual execution of the movie.
There were so many components that the movie could have worked on or just failed to show. Just physically watching the movie is hard because of the amount of movement that happens, and also the amount of times the camera perspective changes due to everyone in the movie having a camera on their ear that looks like a Bluetooth Headset. Also, "Blair Witch" didn't really have anything that made the movie original or unique. Like many generic horror movies that has the setting in the woods, when night comes the characters choose to separate and head into the woods by themselves for small reasons like; going to the bathroom, getting fire wood, and hearing random noises, this is exactly what "Blair Witch" did. Lastly, the ending of the movie was so simple and lacked emotion. Having a bad ending to a movie is probably the worst component that a movie can have because that's the last impression given to the audience. The only good components taken away from the audience that Adam Wingard incorporated into the movie were all the unexpected pop ups of people screaming, and the eerie sound effects to make it feel like your there with the characters, but that's pretty much how every horror film is doing it nowadays.
Should people go see this movie? Well, it would obviously depend on how serious you are when it comes to watching horror movies. If you are a type of person that like to get a few scares here and there then go right ahead, but for the horror movie fans that desires a horror film with a good story, thrilling scares, and a great ending, then don't. The movie "Blair Witch" had a chance to redeem itself and become a humungous hit, but then again, it all depends on the audience that the director was trying to appeal, since everything revolves back to revenue the director probably wanted to make another "scary movie" knowing that the general and fans would go watch it anyways. The "Blair Witch" is just another generic "scary" movie that will disappoint any horror movie fan.
