Review of Prey (2021) by Flipje — 13 Sep 2021
My word, this is... this is bad. Terrible. Awful... I'll say it. Godawful. Premise: a bunch of guys, who instead of doing your typical bachelor party thing, go on a hiking excursion in the woods. There is your typical camaraderie, and we learn who is who and, of course, the main hero.
.. which I believe is Albert. Roman and Albert are brothers, and they looked so similar... anyway... We're supposed to like him because of flashbacks to a vacation he took with his fiancé. That's it. The plot kicks in when the gun shots the bunch have been hearing make contact.
Vincent, the most sheepish of the bunch, is injured. The tire on their SUV is shot. They bolt for the woods. The shooter is unrelenting and the stupid of the script kicks in. Honestly, movies like this depend on unrealistic people doing continuously dumb things.
If you enjoy being frustrated by characters, by all means, this movie is for you. At one point, the band, reduced from four to five are in a visitor's station. The daft girl behind the counter is shot through the window and this crew of geniuses, in a narrow space with plenty of projectiles, make a run for it.
I mean, this shooter is carrying a rifle. Not an automatic weapon. There is a sizeable reloading time. All you would need to do is draw the shooter in and use something, maybe brains, to disarm her. Come on, I thought.
And getting around a narrow space with a rifle, four guys would be able to take on anyone in such a space. And the shooter herself. Bland. Boring. Banal evil at its head-shaking worst. I couldn't take it.
I ended up skipping to the end. More stupid. The remaining hero stumbles on a cave where he finds other dead bodies - other hikers? I got that impression because how else would she have been able to drag so many bodies back to her lair? And if that was the case, that people had gone missing, the daft girl in the visitor's station would have been more concerned and living in the same world where such events had taken place and there would be better phone reception.
Even the scene at the station, gun shots going off, the police woman on the phone is like 'what is happening?' Wow... a police officer not being able to register the sound of gun shuts. But I digress.
.. yes, the ending... the hero manages to disarm the shooter. Of course, he's shot in the process. He's got the gun. All you think as a viewer, okay, wound her at least, discharge that bullet in the gun.
Nope, he throws the gun away. (Sound of face palm inserted.) You got to be kidding me, and then the pasty face, wide-eyed shooter throws herself off a cliff. The end. Wow. Wow. And her motive... I am sure it was motivated because of something bad men did.
Men are so bad. But yes... talk about... it's amazing so much crap is being made. I am sure there are talented people out there but the money is going ... honestly... watching this movie is a depressing reminder of how abysmal most media has become.
In fact, these days, I find critics of films far more entertaining than the films they critique. This is... I honestly need a drink... man... Zero out of ten. Zero for the dumb characters. Zero for the bland revenge motive or whatever the reason for the killing.
Zero for ... yeah, turning me into an alcoholic... again.
