Review of Blair Witch (2016) by Joseph H — 25 Oct 2016
8.2/10.
The Blair Witch Project is one of the most iconic horror movies that started a new wave of found footage horror films. Part of its success was because of its documentary style that really made it even more scarier. However once that was refuted, it lost some of its scare factor, but it still manages to get under your skin. Now this sequel, Blair Witch, more than ten years too late feels a little more genetic, and without the credibility of being real it feels like any other in the woods horror film. Yet, with very effective scares and good acting, this one succeeds and adds to what could become a very successful franchise. This installment, as described by its director is more about being chased and the level of suspense and tension creeps under you and never lets go until the very end. And although repetitive, this was more of a supernatural movie than a more psychological type of horror like the first film. That being said, its hard not to get your expectations high with a movie like this, and although I wasn't completely disappointed it was inevitable to feel this way. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the movie and it was really good, with great scares, good showcase of the mythology and story and although repetitive in some aspects, effective.
