Review of Blair Witch (2016) by Ryan V — 06 Jan 2017
I can't be objective with this one. Seeing the original in the theatre is a fond cinematic memory of mine. Then came the sequel: one of the worst films I've ever seen. I don't throw around a distinction like that often, and have a high tolerance for the mediocre and bad.
But the second one was trash. This looks and feels like it actually fits with the original. Having read awful reviews for this and having gone in with incredibly low expectations, I came away pleased.
Pleased enough, anyways. It's not a classic. But it's decent. And it relies heavily on nostalgia for the original. Which puts this in line with most movies these days. As a big fan of the original found footage movie, this has enough mythology building, atmosphere, production design (during the closing act) and jump scares to get the job done.
