Review of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Diego V — 10 Oct 2017
I was surprised by how much I liked the movie. I watched it in 3D and I felt like it was not just a movie, but also a great audio-visual experience that yearned to be seen on the big screen. It was beautiful to look at, like the originalwas, but it also expanded on things established in the original movie, showing more of the world than just one large city. These days, the original Blade Runner is commonly considered as a Science Fiction classic and has been very influential for many film makers, even though it under-performed at the box office. In my opinion, the sequel more than lives up to the reputation of the original.
There were enough action scenes, but there was also an interesting plot and character development for the main character, played by Ryan Gosling. Harrison Ford also reprised his role as Deckard later in the movie. Not only was his character more than a mere cameo, but he gave a genuinely good performance as a much older Deckard, giving his character more depth, something which many critics have felt, lacked in the original. This time, there's some actual detective work and a genuine mystery, which I will not spoil here. There are the usual tropes: filn noir style, a femme fatale character, a detective who has a miserable life, seedy back alleys, a large conspiracy and also, the typical cyber punk stylings.
See it for the action, great performances, big science fiction ideas and great visuals and heavy themes, like what it means to be a human. I'm sure, when time passes, I will be nit-picking on possible flaws, like perhaps a few plot holes, some pacing issues here and there, or something like that, but at the moment, I can only give it a full score. Even with the long running time, it felt like it was just the perfect length, for the story it wanted to tell. In my opinion, the movie will be talked about, for years to come.
