Review of Blade Runner (1982) by Cooper D — 02 May 2013

This film is completely overrated. While yes, the visuals are impressive for their time, it seems that the effects are the only thing going for the movie. I believe people are so captivated in the mystery of the set that they confuse a spectacle with something that has substance.

The last speech of the movie, the villain's passing one (he's so forgettable I can only remember his hair and not his name, which once again shows how the movie's visuals are the best thing it has going for it) is praised for so many reasons that don't make sense.

Actually listen to what he is saying. Do you know what he's talking about? C beams? Have we seen these C beams? What the hell is a C beam? Have we seen any of these events he's talking about? And where the hell did that dove come from? The characters are so incredibly boring in this movie it's a wonder it's survived this long.

Gladiator, one of Ridley's other works, is criticized for the things THIS movie should be. Gladiator succeeds where this movie fails AND succeeds. Gladiator's effects are beautiful, you can't even tell they're effects.

But it also has a very emotional story to it. Maximus has a human story. His beloved wife has been murdered. What does Ford have in this movie? Ron or whatever his name is. He has absolutely nothing. It was obvious from the beginning that he was the entity he was hunting because anyone should be able to spot a robot in disguise by this point.

He's the most boring character to ever hit the big screen and no amount of visual effects, no matter how impressive, can cure such a mundane and awful story and script.
