Review of Blade (1998) by Adam G — 08 Apr 2013
What's not to like about a badass black guy running around slaying vampires? 1998's Blade is exactly as awesome as it sounds. It's certainly not outstanding, but it's a hell of a lot of fun.
Loosely based on the Marvel Comics character, Blade (Wesley Snipes) is a human-vampire hybrid. While his mother was pregnant, she was bitten by vampire Deacon Frost and then pronounced dead after giving birth. As a result, Blade inherited all the powers that vampires posses, but not their weaknesses. He uses his strength to be a feared vampire slayer. He spends his time stalking and killing vampires, out to avenge the death of his mother and protect the human race from the bloodsuckers.
This is a very stylish film, full of intense action and over-the-top sequences. The imagery is very unique. As you would expect with a film about vampires, there is a large amount of blood and killing, which keeps you entertained the whole way through. Wesley Snipes is truly awesome as Blade, and it's a real blast watching him carve up the undead. This movie relied on heavy CGI in some scenes, which unfortunately looks pretty outdated by today's standards, but you have to remember when this was made. The plot isn't exactly strong, but the style and non-stop action make up for it. Blade is a very fun and entertaining film. 4 stars.
