Review of Blade (1998) by Kevin R — 17 Dec 2018
Extremely underrated Marvel movie. This is the first good Marvel movie. Blade also started the Marvel movie trend. Blade is extremely true and faithful to its comic book origins and roots. It is one of the most accurate and faithful comic book movie adaptations ever. This movie is great. Wesley Snipes was born to play Blade/Eric Brooks. Blade is a vampire hunter who kills vampires and hunts for the vampire who bit his mother while she was giving birth to him. His character motivation is great. That vampire is the villain of this movie. His name is Deacon Frost (played by Stephen Dorff). Stephen Dorff is perfectly cast as Deacon Frost. Blade's human mother being bitten while she was pregnant with him caused Blade to be born as a half-breed, half human and half vampire. He has the vampires' blood thirst but unlike them he can control it. He occasionally has to take some needle shots to prevent him from feeling the need to suck human blood. Unlike most vampires, Blade being a half-breed allows him to be a day walker (meaning he can survive being in the sunlight and any light). Blade's sidekick is an old man named Abraham Whistler who supplies him with weapons. The action scenes in this movie are great. There are a few flaws in this movie: #1 The origin of Blade is not shown in this movie and that was a missed opportunity since the mainstream audience is not familiar with his origin story. #2 The CGI is dated and has aged very poorly. #3 A lot of the deaths in the third act are corny and cartoonish. Overall, this is still a great film. The pacing in this movie is great. The acting is decent. The action is great and very entertaining. The fight choreography is amazing. The story is fairly good. The plot is great. The characters are good. The villain is cool and charismatic.
Rating: 8.3/10.
