Review of Blacula (1972) by Brent R — 22 May 2009
Blacula is vintage 70's Grindhouse Blaxploitation cinema at its best. While visiting the infamous Count Dracula at his mansion to discuss slave trade, African prince Mamuwalde (William Marshall) is imprisoned, bitten, and cursed to be Blacula for eternity.
Locked up in a coffin for nearly 200 years, a cheeky gay couple buy his coffin as an antique, open it, and unwittingly unleash this monstrous force, who goes in search of his former lover (Vonetta McGee) while being chased by Dr.
Gordon Thomas (Thalmus Rasulala). Naturally, a ton of people are bitten along the way and become cursed vampires as well, leading to lots of bloodsucking. William Marshall stands out the most in this film, not so much for being the title character, but how he embodies that role with such class and smoothness.
The story is a bit sloppy in some areas, and nowhere near as entertaining as the sequel, but its still a fun movie and worth a watch, especially for fans of 70's exploitation films. Good watch.
