Review of Blackhat (2015) by Andrew H — 10 Feb 2015
First of all, let me tell you something about myself. I have a Ph.D in Information Technology and I did part of that PhD at MIT just like Thor Hemsworth in this movie. I have heard people mention this movie and its silly depiction of cybercrime.
The producers had a screening in San Francisco for 200 or so top Silicon Valley IT security people, and the movie basically got a round of applause. That part of the movie is very realistic. Actually, the cyber crime technology they use is trivial, but very realistic.
Now, this a movie about terrorists blowing up nuclear plants using cyber warfare, using very realistic and trivial cyber tool. You should be scared. And so, the biggest problem with the movie is that you don't feel scared.
You feel entertained, and this is a Mann type A action movie, and as such it works great. I still recommend everyone to see it, and in 10 years time from now, the movie may unfortunately be remembered as being one of the first to raise flags about cyber warfare in Hollywood.
Now, update your computer, phone, firewall anti virus program and watch a good movie.
