Review of Blackboard Jungle (1955) by Jason R — 10 Dec 2008
If you've ever wondered what an educational film would look like with Hollywood's resources, then you're in luck. Otherwise, this is a long 100 minutes, unless, of course, your favorite movies are really terribly bad movies, in which case this is a camp masterpiece.
Or it would be, if not for the obvious (though, as always, largely wasted) talents of Sidney Poitier. Vic Morrow is also excellent in a supporting role, but Ford's character makes very little sense, and the "social problem" hyperbole is ridiculous within the first five minutes.
Much like "Shaft," this movie also totally misses an ideal musical opportunity by sticking a great song over the opening credit sequence.
