Review of Black Sunday (1960) by Carl N — 18 Aug 2010
This is a truly amazing piece of Gothic horror. Mario Bava's first feature as a director is a classic and in my eyes it's a masterpiece of film making. The atmosphere throughout the film is haunting and stylishly shot.
It also boosts some real moments of terror. Also for a film of its age it's quite graphic in places. A very slow burning story may not be to everyone's taste. But it is so beautifully shot that I wasn't bored for one minute.
I was captivated by the story. Barbara Steele's dual role as Katia & Asa is verification if were needed that she is one of the greatest horror actress of her generation. This is a must see for fans of Italian horror.
