There is a reason Mario Bava's BLACK SUNDAY/THE MASK OF SATAN is called Italys best horror film ,and only just viewing it I can see why. The film starts back in the 1600's were a evil witch called princess Asa and her prince are being burned at the stake with the crime of witchcraft.

Just before they are killed the both of them have the mask of satan hammered to thier face, just before she dies this painful death Asa promises to take out her venegnce on her decendets . Oh did I metion this all happens just before the opening credits? yes the movie is that good it gives a good and errie secene even before it properly starts.

Fastward to the Mid 1800 were two doctors disturb the grave of Asa which gives rise to the two witches. Anyway we then meet Asas decents a prince and his two adult childern Costantine and princess katiana (who is curse with asas beauty and will become her taget to take her orginal mortal form).

The rest of the movie is just so good it shouldn't have any more plot pionts revlied in this reivew. On another note the photography of Mario Bava is just picture perfect each shot looks deep in compostion and tone , perect for a brilliant B/W gothic horror.

100/100 A MUST VIEW FOR ANY HORROR NUT ITS JUST THAT GOOD.
