Review of Black Snake Moan (2006) by Brad Z — 30 Jul 2009
A sometimes provactive and shocking, and other times fun (and even touching) look at redemption and freedom.
I was always very hesitant to watch this film. I mean, just look at the cover, I always thought "what the hell is this sick movie?".
Than, somebody told me what the film was actually about, and I was hesitant no more.
Well, you are probably thinking, what is the film about?
I will tell you.
The film is about a conservative christain african-americain individual, who has strong belief, yet strong fear, in God, and his ways and beliefs have lead him to being a man too curled up in rightouesness, who is also an alchaholic, who is a bit out of his mind. Although, it's not all bad for the man, as he plays the blues like none other.
Anyway, Christina Ricci potrays quite the oppisite. She is a sex and drug addicted confused Caucasian female, who has had an amoral and dark past, and after one very "rough" party night, ends up pretty much on Samuel L. Jackson's character's doorstep., all bruised and beatup, and a bit screwed up in the head, basically on her last leg.
Being the good christain man he seemingly is, he trys to fix her up with medicine, while at the same time, trying to keep it a secret that she is in this man's house.
After many escape attempts, and the fact that she is not well enough for the outside world quite yet, Samuel's character chains her up, trying to destroy all of her demons, through the power of the blues.
Well, I won't tell you any more of the film, because you really have to see it for yourself, but it really is a great movie. Definetely not what I thought it would be. Not only, is the story great, but the messages are also very strong and clear, and if you can get past the sexual content, you will find a beautiful film.
Plus, I have not seen Samuel L. Jackson so badass since Pulp Fiction, and that can just make a movie stand tall on its own.
I reccommend it!
