Review of Black Snake Moan (2006) by Peter K — 03 Jul 2010
Disgruntled blues singer finds beat up slut on the sidewalk next to his house and decides to make her his latest project. Giving her a range of different therapies ranging from ice cold baths, biblical quotes then seals the deal with some musical therapy.
Both Samuel L Jackson and Christina Ricci give excellent performances but the story is so shallow that this barely keeps the film together. The film feels incredibly dragged out and makes its 2 hour run time feel more like 4 or 5. Christina Ricci looks fantastic in a cut off tshirt and white panties and this makes the opening half hour breeze by however things go down hill as soon as she gets some clothes on.
With some great performances, fairly nice filming and some great music there are things to like about Black Snake Moan, it feels like this could have been a much better movie if it would of had around half an hour trimmed from it's running time and the final half hour rewritten or dropped completely.
This film feels more like a statement or metaphor rather than an actual feasible series of events as the plot really is quite ridiculous at times. I wasn't quite sure what this film was trying to say.
Download the soundtrack and skip the movie.
Better than Anaconda worse than Snakes on a Plane.
