Review of Black Snake Moan (2006) by Liam K — 25 Mar 2011
Black Snake Moan's premise, when told to somebody might sound outlandish and campy. How could a southern based grit drama about a broken man redeeming himself to the lord by chaining a skimpy girl whose sex addiction has taken over her life have anybody saying it was acceptable? Well, motherfuckers time to get proven wrong.
Moan is an unflinchingly, daring attempt in film making; one that a rabid watcher myself can appreciate and admire. The major thing that surprised me is that it wasn't this total whirlpool of violence and tragedy.
Yes, it deals with sex, drugs, abuse, and morality, but it doesn't push it over the edge; you don't feel too forced by the gritty and unflinching images. From what I expected, I thought it would be more unsettling.
Don't let that fool you that this film is a kid fest fun and fancy free escapist film. The abuse inflicted on Christina Ricci is brutal and nasty, the sex and nudity that occurs is definately unsettling.
The great performance between Jackson and Ricci is terrific and great to watch. Justin Timberlake gives a whiny, hesitant performance as a panic attacked recruit who gets kicked out of boot camp within a week.
The great blues soundtrack is great, setting the film in the specific mood the director wants the audience to feel. Overall, couldn't be more happier to give a glance at this flick.
