Review of Black Sea (2009) by Jason A — 16 Feb 2015
A slow-burn thriller from director Kevin MacDonald, Black Sea will have you feeling tense for most of the film. Jude Law leads a solid cast of men who are battling jealousy, greed, and each other as they fight for survival in a broken down submarine.
You can feel the pressure and claustrophobia of that submarine on screen. It's a palpable tension that permeates the entire film. This is what makes the film work so great, and what elevates it from your normal January fare.
Black Sea is a film that is most interested in balancing ideas about redemption and greed, and balancing tones of dread and hope all at one time.
