Review of Black Robe (1991) by Chris B — 09 Apr 2018
This is a near flawless film with superb acting and costuming and magnificent story and script, directed by the great Bruce Beresford. It explores the clash of two cultures and the way one would forever change the other.
American reviewers don?t like this film because it draws attention to the planned genocide of the North American Native peoples...the Shawnee, Apache, Cherokee, Iroquois...the list goes on. Canada was not so ruthless, but works hard now to honour and restore native culture.
American has bleached and erased theirs. See this movie before Dances with Wolves...it?s far more realistic...at times I felt like I was watching a reality tv doco. A classic.
