Review of Black Orpheus (1959) by Vadim G — 17 Sep 2007
Retelling of the myth set in a Rio de Janeiro favela around the time of the Carnival. You pretty much know what's going to happen, so the attraction of the film is not the plot, but the wonderful atmosphere and plot.
The music (by Luiz Bonfa and Antonio Carlos Jobim) is a big part of it, as well: the film introduced what was to become Bossa Nova to the western world. A beautiful film!
