Review of Black Narcissus (1947) by Carl F — 17 Oct 2007
This film came highly recomended but I struggled to enjoy the first half of it. However, it does get more enjoyable as the Himalayan nuns become seduced at first by the scenary and then by the godless Mr Dean and the Young General, a character who reminded me of the cat from Red Dwarf.
Few films made more recently have focused so much on the female characters, although they all seemed to be defined by their relationships with men. Jean Simmons (not the guy from Kiss) steals more than one scene as the low caste Indian cleaner but the star of the film is the slightly barmy Sister Ruth played by the wonderfully over the top Kathleen Byron.
Worth a look but wont change your life.
